Danielle Caldwell has become a back-to-back All-Star when she was named as Mayo’s only recipient at Saturday night’s TG4 All-Star awards banquet, in association with Lidl, at the Bonnington Dublin Hotel.
The Mayo defender was one of only four 2022 winners to also be named as All-Stars for their exploits in 2023. The other trio are Kerry’s Cáit Lynch, Niamh Carmody and Louise Ní Mhuircheartaigh who receive the prestigious individual accolades once again.
Caldwell was one of five Mayo players nominated this year, alongside Clodagh McManamon, Ciara Needham, Sinéad Cafferky and team captain Kathryn Sullivan.
All-Ireland Senior champions Dublin led the way with eight players selected on the 2023 TG4 Ladies Football All-Star team. Dublin’s haul eclipses their previous all-time best of seven players on the annual selection, which was achieved twice in 2018 and 2019.
Dublin’s eight winners are goalkeeper Abby Shiels, defenders Leah Caffrey, Lauren Magee and Martha Byrne, midfielder Jennifer Dunne, and forwards Orlagh Nolan, Hannah Tyrrell and Carla Rowe.
Finalists Kerry were rewarded with five All-Star award winners, namely defenders Eilís Lynch and Cáit Lynch, midfielder Lorraine Scanlon, and forwards Niamh Carmody and Louise Ní Mhuircheartaigh.
Danielle Caldwell and Cork forward Ciara O’Sullivan completed the line-up, meaning just four counties are represented on the All-Star team. O’Sullivan is now a five-time winner, bridging a five-year gap after winning her fourth award in 2018.
In a remarkable achievement for one club, the 2023 TG4 All-Star team also contains three players from Castleisland Desmonds in Kerry – Eilís Lynch, Cáit Lynch and Lorraine Scanlon.
