Mayo senior manager Andy Moran took exception to a suggestion that fans in the county would be more reserved in the build-up to the All-Ireland final than in previous years .
All in all, it was a day to remember for Moran and his Mayo side yesterday (Saturday) evening, who are back in the All-Ireland final after a comprehensive win over Louth and Mayo supporters roared on their delight at full-time.
The victory means Mayo will be into an eighth All-Ireland final, including replays, since 2012 and a fourteenth since 1989. Mayo’s record in those finals is well-documented but when the question was put to Moran about whether the county will go crazy once again or be more muted, the Ballaghaderreen native bristled at the notion that fans should not get carried away.
Addressing the media, Moran said: “You laugh at that, lads. I don’t laugh at that. I find it actually very dismissive, if I’m being honest. I think it’s a bullshit question. I don’t mean that in any disrespect, but I think it’s a disrespectful question. Our county have been starved the last four or five years. If they go a bit nuts, let them.
“You’re going to go to a game tomorrow. Every single one of ye, you’re going to write tomorrow that Kerry or Dublin will win the All-Ireland Final, right? Right? Does anyone here think we’re all going to win the All-Ireland final?
“No,” said one journalist brave enough to respond.
“No. Thank you. So that question is nonsense.”
