Well in excess of €1million was spent on Mayo GAA’s inter-county teams this season, according to figures presented to last week’s monthly meeting of the County Board.

Draft accounts show an outlay of €1,183,622 on county team administration for a ten-month period up to July 31, 2023 – almost an exact €100,000 increase on what was spent on Mayo’s inter-county teams in 2022 (€1,083,506), despite Mayo that year reaching both the All-Ireland minor football final and the Christy Ring Cup hurling final.

The breakdown on how much was spent on the senior football team in comparison to all other Mayo teams combined will not become known until the financial statement for the year ended September 30, 2023 is prepared for this year’s Mayo GAA Convention, but the figure last year (€644,078) amounted to well over half.

The draft account as prepared by Mayo GAA treasurer Valerie Murphy shows that €608,747 was generated in commercial income which represents a reduction of more than 50% on the overall figure for the year previous when, among several sponsorship arrangements, a rebranding MacHale Park was agreed with Hastings Insurance.

Gate receipts up to July 31 were €429,496 which is well short of the €781,805 collected in 2022, albeit club championship gates in August and September have still to be factored into this year’s accounts. Fundraising activities amassed €441,047 for the same ten-month period.

Overall, Mayo GAA’s financial account for the year currently shows a surplus of €316,120, with savings looking likely by year’s end on the amounts spent on matchday costs and the upkeep and maintenance of grounds in particular.

Meanwhile, GAA Central Council has awarded a €150,000 infrastructure grant to Hastings Insurance MacHale Park. It’s part of the association’s €3.5 million investment nationwide into county grounds, with a further € 4.2 million allotted to clubs.
