All-Ireland Final countdown: Eve of the Match to evoke memories of Mayo legend

On the eve of next weekend’s All-Ireland SFC Final, Ardnaree Sarsfields GAA are to host a special day of football, music and fun in memory of one of Mayo’s greatest players who came from their community.
The club are proud to host the Joe Corcoran Memorial Cup on Saturday, July 25, with proceedings getting underway at 1pm at the home of Ardnaree Sarsfields GAA, Sean Duffy Park.
The annual memorial game celebrates the life and legacy of Joe Corcoran, who is widely regarded as one of the finest footballers to ever wear the green and red of Mayo and the green and gold of Ardnaree Sarsfields.
Corcoran played almost 100 times for Mayo between 1958 and 1974 and was a distinguished scorer. He held the record for Mayo’s highest scorer for a long period of time, only being surpassed in 2012 by Conor Mortimer and later Cillian O’Connor. He won two Connacht titles in 1967 and 1969 and a National League title in 1970. At club level, he won two Mayo Junior Club titles with Ardnaree Sarsfields.
A player of exceptional skill, affectionally known as ‘Jinkin’ Joe, he displayed immense courage and leadership and inspired teammates, opponents and supporters alike throughout a distinguished playing career. His commitment to excellence and his love for Gaelic football continue to serve as an inspiration to new generations of players and all within his home community.
The Joe Corcoran Memorial Cup is much more than a football match. It is an opportunity for family, friends, former teammates, supporters and the wider community to come together in remembrance of a sporting icon whose contribution to Mayo football remains deeply respected.
This year's event promises to be a memorable family occasion, featuring the Joe Corcoran Memorial Cup match throwing in at 1pm, live music throughout the day, a community barbecue and entertainment for all ages.
Importantly, all funds raised on the day will be donated to the Irish Heart Foundation, supporting the charity's vital work in heart health awareness, research, patient support and life-saving education across the country.
