An East Mayo filling station has been nominated for two prestigious retail awards and recognised amongst its Irish peers for supporting the development of staff and local communities.
Kilkelly Londis Filling Station along the N17 has been nominated in two separate categories in the Shelflife-C-Store Awards, one of the most coveted honours in the convenience store business.
The newly revamped store, which has 17 full-time and part-time staff members, is in the running for the ‘Best Staff Development Award’ and the ‘Best Community Initiative’ awards.
Store Manager Owen Kelly said it was a huge honour to be nominated ahead of tomorrow evening’s ceremony which will take place at the Royal Marine Hotel in Dún Laoghaire.
“It’s a collective effort by all of us and that is what makes it for us,” Owen said.
“We have had one of our girls here go through an apprenticeship, a couple of ladies here have done numerous courses and we are immensely proud of that, but I think the community nomination and the fact that we are lucky enough to be able to give back and continuously donate to charitable causes in the local communities of Kilmovee, Aghamore and Kilkelly is fantastic.”
Owen praised store owner Jenny Higgins for her support, belief in staff members and willingness to promote and incentivise young employees.
Londis nominated the Kilkelly store for the awards four months after the retailer changed over from Centra.
A full revamp of the store was completed on Friday, November 10.
An official launch will take place early in 2024 with lots of special offers, live music and giveaways in the store for several days.
