After winning his first international cap in the summer, Connacht's Shayne Bolton is keen to build on his momentum.

Injuries hampered Bolton in his first couple of seasons with the province, as he struggled for form and minutes following his move from South Africa in 2021.

However, after staying injury-free and earning his spot on the wing for Connacht, he has shown what he is capable of and played against Portugal in July.

Speaking ahead of the start of the URC season this weekend, Bolton is relieved to have overcome the setbacks to earn his first game for Ireland.

"It was definitely a dream. When I came over, I didn't know if it was going to happen.

"There were a few tough seasons with injuries and stuff, where I started losing a little bit of belief. It was an unbelievable feeling for me and my family.

"I am so, so thankful that they back me and they support me even though it is far away from home.

"At the moment, I am just trying to focus on the small things I can do to improve my game. Try and get a good start to the URC, take it game to game and impress from there."

After a frustrating season for Connacht, which saw them finish in 13th place in the URC, there is excitement around the squad ahead of the opening game against Benetton on Saturday.

With construction ongoing for a new stand at the Dexcom, Stuart Lancaster has taken over as head coach, with Rob Simasek as attack coach, there is a lot to be positive about.

During his time at Leinster, the province's young attacking talent thrived. It may be early days so far, but Bolton has been impressed by what he has seen.

Results may not have gone their way last season, but an exciting backline featuring Bolton has often got fans off their seats.

The 26-year-old is also encouraged by the backing he has received from the new head coach.

"It is very exciting, I learn loads from when I came in the first day. It was definitely a scary feeling coming in, but I am so excited for the season.

"Me and him (Lancaster) had a chat a couple of weeks ago, and he just told me to believe in myself more. A few small work-ons in my game, I will be taking any bit of advice I can get from him.

"He has just given me a bit more belief and backing, myself and the players around me.

"I wouldn't say I talk much in the dressing room, but he is definitely encouraging me to speak a bit more. Being in the Ireland camp, I have been learning from more experienced players in the back three, and I am trying to bring it over to the young players in the squad."
