Renowned musician to play at Killala Bay Folk Club on Friday

Kevin Burke is steeped in Sligo's musical tradition.

Killala Bay Folk Club is celebrating its seventh anniversary this Friday, and its secretary Andrew Gillespie is excited to welcome one of the most famous Irish traditional musicians ever to Killala to mark the occasion, along with a spectacular teller of ghostly tales very suitable for Hallowe'en.

“Fiddle player Kevin Burke is steeped in the traditional music of Sligo,” says Andrew. “His collaborations with the late great guitarist and singer Micheál Ó’Domhnaill are the stuff of legend.”

Kevin is perhaps most famous for his work with the seminal trad super-group, the Bothy Band, as well as the exceptional and influential Patrick Street, and he is coming to the Far Side Café at Johnny Lynn’s pub in Killala this Friday.

"The club, which meets there on the first Friday of every month, has become so well-known and successful since it was founded seven years ago, that a lot of very well-known musicians want to appear in Killala these days," says Andrew.

Appearing on the same night is Ireland’s most famous storyteller, Eddie Lenihan.

“He’s widely recognised as Ireland’s greatest seanchaí, and he’s been collecting Irish stories and folklore all his life,” explains Andrew. “He’s particularly well known for his tales of Irish heroes, fairies, fallen angels and other supernatural beings, and he’ll have people on the edge of their seats. It’s that time of year – Samhain! – when all the ghosts come out, so it will be a great experience.”

Spaces are limited, as the intimate venue holds no more than 50 people, so anyone who wants to get ahead of the curve should contact Andrew on 087-7452498. Doors open at 9pm at the Far Side Café at Johnny Lynn’s pub in Killala on Friday, November 3rd.
