Renowned Mayo band to mark 80th anniversary
The famous Keel Pipe Band marks its 80th anniversary this year.
Music, memories and village pride will take centre stage in Achill this March as Keel Pipe Band celebrates its 80th anniversary, marking eight decades of tradition.
The tradition of pipe bands on Achill started in 1946, when the Keel Pipe Band made their proud march to Pollagh Church on St Patrick’s morning. To celebrate the milestone, the band is hosting a five-day programme of events in Keel from March 13 to 17, culminating in what organisers are calling an incredibly special 80th St Patrick’s Day for the band.
The festivities will begin on Friday, March 13. A pop-up history museum in Keel Hall (11am to 3pm) will display photographs, memorabilia, and stories from the band’s remarkable history, followed by a night of ceol agus craic in the Annexe Inn.
The exhibition continues on Saturday and Sunday (11am to 3pm), giving locals and visitors the chance to explore the band’s journey from its early beginnings to its role today as one of Achill’s most recognisable cultural groups.
A highlight of the weekend will be the sold-out 80th anniversary dinner dance, taking place in the Bonny Spot Festival Marquee on Saturday evening. The celebration promises music, dancing and a chance for past and present members, families, and supporters to come together and honour the band’s legacy. The dance will be followed by a Festival Club from 11.30pm ‘til late, ensuring the celebrations continue long into the night. Please bring cash for admission fee.
One of the standout nights of the anniversary celebrations will take place on Sunday night in the Bonny Spot Festival Marquee, when renowned Irish folk group the Kilkennys take to the stage. Widely regarded as one of Ireland’s leading traditional and folk bands it promises to be a night not to be missed! Limited tickets available. Keeping the party going long after the final encore, DJ Seán Molloy will take over the decks, bringing a lively mix of favourites to ensure the festival atmosphere continues late into the night. Please bring cash for admission fee.
On Monday, March 16, the commemorations take a more reflective tone with a remembrance ceremony at Slievemore Graveyard, honouring past band members and those who helped shape the band over the decades. The celebrations conclude on St Patrick’s Day, Tuesday March 17, when the band will follow their usual traditions, marking what organisers describe as a milestone St Patrick’s Day for the community.
Speaking ahead of the celebrations, organisers say the anniversary is about more than the band itself.
“This weekend is about celebrating 80 years of music, the village and tradition in Keel. The band has always been about bringing people together, and we are looking forward to welcoming past members, families, friends, and visitors back to Keel to mark this special occasion,” they said.
