Clogher Active Age group last week celebrated the 90th birthday of Bernie McGreal. Bernie is a long-time member of the group and enjoys meeting her friends every week.

90th Birthday celebration

The Clogher Active Age group this week celebrated the 90th birthday of Bernie McGreal. Bernie is a long-time member of the group and enjoys meeting her friends every week as well as taking part in the many outings which are organised during the year. The celebrations will continued at the weekend with Bernie’s children, grandchildren and great grandchildren and extended family and friends.

Bereaved

Deepest sympathy is extended to James Kilboyle, Newtown, on the recent passing of his mother, Mary Kilboyle, Crossboyne, Farmhill, Claremorris. Mary passed away peacefully in the care of Brookvale Manor, Ballyhaunis, surrounded by her loving family on February 3.

Predeceased by her parents John and Bridie McGuinness (nèe McHugh) and her brother Patsy. She is deeply regretted by her loving husband Seamus, children James, Fiona, Padraic and Declan, grandchildren Emma, Aiden, Mason and Kai, brothers Noel and Fr. Brendan, daughter-in-law Bernie, partners Teddie, Lisa and Eugene, sisters-in-law Doreen and Una, brother-in-law Sean, extended family, friends, neighbours and relatives to whom sincere sympathy is extended.

Mary’s remains reposed at St. Colman’s Funeral Home, Lower James Street, Claremorris, on Wednesday, February 5 from 5pm with removal at 7pm to the Church of the Sacred Heart, Crossboyne. Mary’s Requiem Mass took place on Thursday morning at 11.30am followed by burial ceremonies afterwards in Crossboyne Cemetery. May she rest in peace.

The committee and players at Clogher send heartiest congratulations to their senior card player Bridie McDermott on her 93rd birthday and wish her many more years of health and happiness.

Basket Weaving Workshop

Anybody interested in Basket Weaving? Tom Delaney of ‘Ould Crafty’ https://www.ouldcrafty.com/ is available in February to give four two hour classes in basket weaving. This is an opportunity to create a unique piece for your home as well as enjoy a couple of hours with friends or neighbours. The classes will take place in Clogher Community Hall. The course is part funded by MSLETB and will cost €40 per person for the four nights. All materials will be supplied. If interested contact Breege Blake at 086 3706757.

Clogher Active Age

Clogher Active Age will hold their AGM later in February and are currently looking at an interesting schedule of events for the coming year. New members are always welcome to come and join in the exercise, games and lunch.

Grow

Grow is a mental health support program based on lived experience. This mean Grow groups are a meeting of peers, who are striving to develop and maintain good mental health. If you would like to know more, you can call your local GROW office on 1800 558 268. You can also register for ‘Welcome to Grow’, the online orientation session. This will give you an introduction to how meetings work and an opportunity to ask questions. You can also search for a group close by to you by using Find a Group and just turning up. No registrations are needed.

‘Know your Locality’

‘Know your Locality’ is an upcoming free hybrid course (online plus an in person field trip), commencing on this Tuesday, February 11. The course will take you step-by-step through the available online sources that will allow you to paint a picture of the geological, archaeological, and historical events that happened close to where you live Register: https://iafs.ie/know-your-locality-mayo-february-march-2025/.

A Re-turn Bin is now located at Errew Community Centre for all cans and plastic bottles with the Re-turn Logo only. Please support the Community Centre by using this recycling facility.

The Hunchback of Notre Dame

Tickets for Ballinrobe Musical Society’s production of ‘The Hunchback of Notre Dame’ are on sale now. The link to purchase tickets is available on the society’s Facebook and Instagram pages. Inspired by the Victor Hugo novel and much-loved Disney film, ‘The Hunchback of Notre Dame’ is a dramatic, chorus-driven show that will appeal to audiences of all ages.

The ‘Hunchback of Notre Dame’ takes place in Ballinrobe Community School from Sunday, February 16 to Saturday, February 22. Sunday’s show will take place at 5pm, with Monday to Saturday’s shows running nightly at 8pm.

Mayo Mental Health Association

The information centre in Bohernasup, Ballina is open in the community. They provide options, support and guidance for individuals and their families experiencing mental health difficulties. The late Tony Flanagan

The death has taken place of Tony Flanagan, Manchester and formerly Ballyclogher, Balla. Tony passed away suddenly but peacefully in Manchester and his passing is an occasion of great sorrow to his family in Balla and many friends in Balla and Manchester. Predeceased by his father Ger, he is deeply regretted by his mother Pattie, brothers Liam and Declan, sisters Irene, Pauline, Catherine and Breege sisters-in-law Maggie and Grace, brothers-in-law Michael, Mick, Paraic and Eddie, nephews Emmet, Gerard, Matthew, Darren, Michael, Nathan, Dean and Oisin, nieces Tara, Andrea, Amber, Ellie and Ciara, grandnephews Max, Odin, Rioch and Senan, aunts, cousins and a large circle of friends to whom sincere condolences are extended.

Tony’s remains were taken to the Manchester Irish Centre for a small service to allow his UK friends say their goodbyes at 1pm on Monday, February 3, after which they returned back home to Ballyclogher, Balla for his funeral. Huge crowds attended as his remains reposed at Balla Funeral Home on last Thursday evening from 5 until 7pm. Requiem Mass was celebrated on Friday at 11.30 in St Cronan's Church, Balla, with burial ceremonies afterwards in the New Cemetery. Ar dheis De go raibh a nAinm.

Balla GAA lotto

Balla GAA lotto draw was held in The Shebeen on January 30, for a jackpot of €10,100. 7, 17, 19 and 31 were the numbers drawn and there was no winner of the jackpot. The €30 consolation winners were Fran Glynn (Annual), John McEllin (annual) and Zach Ralph (cash sale). The latest draw was held on Thursday, February 6, when the jackpot stood at €10,200. Balla Monster Bingo

Balla bingo takes place on Sundays at Balla Community Centre or online, 8pm. There is a generous €12,000 prize fund at the weekend Sunday session. Don't forget to buy your books before 12 noon on Sundays.

Local 25 Card Games

Balla Centre hosts a 25 card drive every Saturday night in Balla Community Centre. Call the Centre at 094 9365843 for more information. Manulla 25 card game takes place at 9pm in the local Centre on Sunday nights. New 25 card players are always welcome.

Age Friendly Mayo

Age Friendly Mayo is delivered by Mayo County Council and works to improve the services that older people have identified as being important to them and the wider community, as they live healthy and active lives. The projects they offer, in conjunction with other organisations include; outdoor spaces and buildings, transportation, housing, respect and social inclusion, social participation, communication and education, civic participation and employment and health and wellbeing.

The key contributors to this programme are the Age Friendly Alliance and Mayo OIder Peoples Council. The Age Friendly Alliance brings together, older people, service providers and businesses to change thinking about aging and how services to our older people are planned and delivered.
