What services in Mayo are affected by the public sector strike?
Schools and Universities are closed, healthcare appointments are cancelled, and Leinster House will not sit today.
300,000 workers are holding a one-day work stoppage over pay talks on Wednesday, as protests are ongoing across the country.
Schools and Universities are closed, healthcare appointments are cancelled, and Leinster House will not sit today.
The strike is happening because of an impasse between trade unions and the Government on the basis for entering talks to finalise a new agreement.
Unions are arguing that pay terms must be agreed â before other issues – such as productivity – are discussed, as workers continue to be adversely impacted by the cost-of-living crisis.
The Government has rejected this condition, saying it represents a break from previous deals.
Here is how people will be affected due to the strikes:
All non-urgent healthcare services and outpatient appointments in hospitals and community settings are expected to be cancelled. Patients should have already been informed about the cancellations.
People are encouraged to call 999 or 112 or attend their nearest emergency department if needing urgent medical care.
Emergency Departments, ambulance services operating at reduced capacity, and other critical and time-sensitive healthcare services, including urgent cancer treatment and dialysis, will continue to operate.
Dentists working in the HSE will also join the strike.
Schools and Universities are closed today as the Irish National Teachers’ Organisation, the Association of Secondary Teachers Ireland, the Teachers’ Union of Ireland and the Irish Federation of University Teachers are all taking part in the industrial action.
Special needs assistants, who are represented by Fórsa trade union, will also be on strike.
All Mayo County Council public buildings, offices, libraries and public service points will be closed to the public for the duration of the day.
As a result, Council services will be unavailable. Normal opening arrangements will resume on Thursday.
All driving tests scheduled for Wednesday have been cancelled because staff from the Road Safety Authority will be taking part in the strike.
Cancelled tests will be rescheduled for later dates.
Gardaí and the Defence Forces are not on strike, while public transport is expected to operate as normal.
