'Very significant' update on Mayo housing developments

"It is crucial that we continue the supply of homes in Ballina, North Mayo and across the county"

Minister for Rural and Community Development and the Gaeltacht Dara Calleary has welcomed confirmation that construction is to begin on a Social Housing development at the site of the Old Duffy’s Bakery in Ballina.

“Mayo County Council has confirmed to me that the construction of 31 units at the site of the Old Duffy’s Bakery, Raheen Row, will begin on the week commencing 2nd February. Finna Construction, a Mayo based firm, has been awarded the contract, and will be on site on the first week of February. It is anticipated that the construction of 31 units comprising 3 x 3 bedroom, 14 x 2 bedroom and 14 x 1 bedroom unit will take approximately 18 months.

“I have also been informed that it is expected that construction of 81 units at the Old Chesire Home, Killala Road, will commence in March. These are very significant developments for Ballina and Mayo County Council and will help greatly in the supply of homes for families and individuals on the Local Authority housing list locally. I want to acknowledge the efforts of Mayo County Council representatives and officials, as well as my Cabinet colleague Minister James Browne, in having these projects moved forward to construction.

“It is crucial that we continue the supply of homes in Ballina, North Mayo and across the county. Public developments such as these, supplemented by private development, will help in the medium term, and we must continue to make it easier in terms of the planning process for large scale developments and the construction of private dwellings. Minister Browne has made great progress in this regard and we will continue to do all we can to allow homes be built as quickly and efficiently as possible."
