Cllr Ger Deere and Cllr Donna Sheridan both condemned the vandalism.

A Castlebar councillor has condemned recent incidents of vandalism in the town.

Cllr Ger Deere made his comments at last week's municipal district meeting when he told colleagues that there is graffiti "on all signs at Lough Lannagh and also at Cavendish Lane and down at the Market Square".

"My thanks to Joe and the Tidy Towns team who cleaned it up but this is just totally unacceptable.”

Outgoing Cathaoirleach Cllr Donna Ruane said it was “so disheartening for community groups to see someone coming along and destroying things”, adding: “You just wonder what is the mindset. What I would like is for them to be given a toothbrush and to put to work all day cleaning it because that is the punishment that should be meted out for community vandalism.”

Cllr Sheridan added that another issue was arising at Lough Lannagh where “a person is going around on a scrambler bike".

"A person was walking with their child when this happened and it was so dangerous. Thankfully, the Gardaí made a quick response but this is something else happening there now and I don’t know how we deal with that.”

Cllr Deere had also sought an update on the provision of a water station at Lough Lannagh. In relation to this matter, the head of the municipal district David Mellett told members: “As part of proposed casual trading bylaws, two trading bays have been identified at the amenity and also a place for the fountain and we are engaging with Uisce Éireann and with a view to a circular economy to see can we work this out.”
