A US Navy ship which has been named after a heroic Ballyhaunis man will be christened next weekend - Saturday, July 27.

The USS Patrick Gallagher has inherited its name after an exemplary Marine who received awards for his courageous acts - including throwing himself on a grenade to save comrades during the Vietnam War in 1966.

The construction of the ship started in 2018 and cost 2.5 billion.

The Gallagher family and extended members are travelling from Ballyhaunis to the historic occasion at the General Dynamics Bath Iron Works in Bath, Maine while Minister Sean Fleming TD and Commodore Cian O Mearin from the Irish Defence Forces are representing the Government.

Altogether, 2,000 people will be in attendance to commemorate Patrick Gallagher's (1944 - 1967) legacy.

The christening of the ship will be streamed live on Saturday, July 27 at 4pm (Irish time): https://vimeo.com/event/4279175
