Update provided on the potential Mayo An Post impasse
Minister Dillon said he will continue to work closely with Ballyhaunis businesses, postal workers, and local representatives to ensure that the community’s interests are fully represented.
Minister of State Alan Dillon TD met this morning (Friday) with postal workers at the Ballyhaunis Sorting Centre, representatives of the Ballyhaunis Chamber of Commerce, and Cllr Alma Gallagher, as efforts intensify to resolve the ongoing dispute between An Post and staff over proposed operational changes.
During the meeting, Minister Dillon listened directly to workers’ concerns regarding the future of the Ballyhaunis sorting operation and the potential impact on local employment, service reliability, and the wider business community.
He reaffirmed his commitment to ensuring that the voices of workers and local businesses are heard at the highest levels of Government.
Minister Dillon confirmed that he has already spoken with the Tánaiste, Simon Harris, and is arranging a meeting with An Post CEO David McRedmond. “A meeting is being scheduled with Mr. McRedmond where we will outline the concerns raised locally and seek clarity on An Post’s plans for Mayo’s postal services.”
“Ballyhaunis has a long and proud postal tradition, and the workers here provide an essential service to families and businesses across East Mayo,” Minister Dillon said.
“The concerns raised today are serious and require urgent engagement. I will be escalating this matter within Government and directly with An Post’s senior leadership.”
Over 3,300 Mayo residents have signed a petition opposing the amalgamation of Mayo’s postal delivery services, reflecting fears that moving operations to Castlerea, Co. Roscommon could lead to slower delivery times, reduced local employment, and diminished service quality.
Minister Dillon said he will continue to work closely with Ballyhaunis businesses, postal workers, and local representatives to ensure that the community’s interests are fully represented.
“I want to be absolutely clear, no decisions should be made without proper engagement with those directly affected,” he said. “I will be pressing An Post to provide certainty, transparency, and a commitment to maintaining strong postal services in Mayo.”
