Tributes to North Mayo 'legend' who made a lasting difference

The news of the passing of Paddy O'Hora has been met with tremendous sadness.

Warm tributes have been paid following the news of the passing of popular businessman Paddy O’Hora.

Paddy was a leading figure in Knockmore GAA club and was named President of the club last year. He played a key role in community organisations, most notably Ballina Community Clean Up.

He ran Business Supplies in Ballina for many years and the straight-talking and affable businessman was a much-loved and respected figure.

Online tributes poured in following the news of Paddy’s passing.

The Friends of St Joseph’s Hospital organisation in Ballina paid tribute to “an absolute legend.” “The heart and soul of the place, a true gentleman, and someone who gave so much to everyone around him. Always there, always steady, always looking out for others,” said the group.

David Devers, of Connacht Print and Signs, said the loss of his former boss and mentor will leave a huge void.

“To say Paddy was as straight as a die is an understatement. He was a born leader, and his tireless work ethic drove him to build a very successful business. Anyone who knew him will remember his honesty—brutally honest at times—and the fact that he never pulled his punches.

He was also a loving, kind, and generous soul with a heart of gold, always the life and soul of the party, usually at the centre of whatever mischief was going on. A laugh that could fill any room,” said David.

“First and foremost, Paddy was a proud family man and a proud Knockmore man. A die-hard GAA fanatic who through his efforts on the pitch for Knockmore GAA earned the nickname Tractor and he loved to explain that one over a pint. His knowledge of sport but GAA in particular knew no bounds. Football rivalries aside, Paddy made his living in Ballina and has left a huge void in the town he loved. In retirement, he dedicated himself to the Ballina Community Clean-Up, finding great solace in the work and playing a leading role in its many efforts.

“Paddy, you have left the world a better place and your legacy will stand the test of time through the many projects and through your influence,” he added.

Paddy was the chairman of Ballina Community Clean-Up, and the group posted photos which showed Paddy’s warmth and character.

They said their chair was “a community hero who was so approachable to every generation.” “We shall not see his like again” the group stated.
