Tributes are paid to retiring Mayo garda

Garda O'Reilly served on Achill Island.

Tributes were paid to a long-serving local Garda on his last appearance in Achill District Court.

Dublin native Gda Martin O’Reilly is retiring from An Garda Síochána next month after 17 years of dedicated service to the Achill area.

Judge Sandra Murphy paid tribute to the dedication and professionalism of Gda O’Reilly.

“I know you have taken Achill to your heart. I want to thank you for your work for the people of Achill."

Judge Murphy said so much vital community work carried out by Gardaí in rural areas goes unseen and deserves to be recognised.

Local solicitor Gareth Bourke said Gda O’Reilly is a kind and thoughtful man who carried out his duties in a fair and understanding fashion.

“An Garda Síochána’s loss if your family’s gain. You are literally regarded as a local here on Achill."

Gda O’Reilly thanked the legal practitioners in the area for the fantastic rapport and co-operation he has enjoyed over the years and thanked his Achill colleagues Gda Sinead Barrett, Keith Deane, and Kevin Carey for their support.
