Mulhern’s Gala in Crossmolina, Gala Keel in Achill, and Murphy’s Gala in Ballyhaunis, Co. Mayo, have each been selected as recipients of a Gala Greener Grant, an initiative aimed at supporting retailers in their transition to sustainable technologies.
As part of Gala Retail’s nationwide commitment to sustainability, Gala Greener Grants offer financial support to Gala retailers seeking to reduce their energy usage by adopting sustainable technologies, such as waste heat recovery systems, solar photovoltaic (PV) systems, and electric vehicle (EV) charging points. The initiative is part of a €500,000 sustainability fund, which will be distributed to Gala retailers across Ireland by 2030.
With the support of the grants, the three Mayo stores have each installed new refrigeration systems, significantly reducing their energy consumption and environmental impact. Mulhern’s Gala will save an estimated 10,080 kWh annually, cutting COâ emissions by 3,280 tonnes – equivalent to over 234 trees. Gala Keel will save around 8,816 kWh per year, reducing COâ emissions by 2,240 tonnes – the same impact as over 160 trees. Murphy’s Gala will achieve annual savings of 21,683 kWh, lowering COâ emissions by 5,030 tonnes – equivalent to over 335 trees.
Gary Desmond, CEO of Gala Retail, commented:
“At Gala, we understand the vital role that retailers play in their communities and the importance of helping them to adopt sustainable practices. Through the Gala Greener Grants scheme, we aim to support our retailers as they invest in the future and contribute to a greener, more sustainable Ireland. These three Mayo stores are leading the way, and we’re excited to see the positive impact this will make locally.” Gala’s commitment to sustainability reflects the growing importance of environmental responsibility within the retail sector. By providing financial incentives and support, Gala Retail is encouraging its network of retailers to embrace innovative technologies that benefit both their businesses and their communities.
