The Society of Chartered Surveyors Ireland (SCSI) held its West/North West Regional Conference earlier this month in the Clayton Hotel in Galway.
It is one of the highlights of the year for the organsation, bringing together different sectors of the surveying profession to meet, discuss and hear about regional updates and insights for the western region.
The SCSI is the professional body that represents surveyors in the property, land and construction sector in Ireland. This event brought together surveyors who are associated and work within the profession which presented an ideal opportunity for many from the geographic locations of Donegal, Sligo, Mayo, Leitrim, Roscommon and Galway to gather with each of the regions having multiple representation at this well attended gathering.
Great efforts were made by many to travel to Galway for the conference, which provided insight from many leaders across the different professions in the industry.
This conference was privileged to hear from guest speaker Minster of State Sean Canney TD, a native of Belclare in Tuam, who updated attendees about some of the key infrastructure projects planned for the West and North West which will involve interaction from the government and semi-state bodies working with those in the surveying profession to deliver over the next number of years. The insight and investment will benefit the western corridor and those in the professional sector will be required to provide expertise in order to deliver such projects. The news was widely welcomed by all in attendance.
The event also brought together many industry leaders in the surveying profession such as Gerard O’Toole, President of the Society of Chartered Surveyor; Patricia Staunton, Regional Director of Cushman and Wakefield; David Rowe, Chair of the SCSI West/North West Regional Committee; Tomas Kelly, Director, Aecom; Brendan Dooley, Director, Cogent Associates and Brian Morrow, quantity surveyor and life coach. Each speaker provided their insight and updates on a range of activities in the build environment for the west. The conference also hosted an open discussion on the challenges which face those working in the profession on the ground, with input from a panel of speakers. On closing, there was a welcomed insight into the importance of health and well-being within the industry.

The strong turnout of surveyors at the conference is testament to those in the western region who act for a range of different clients and organisations in delivering a must needed service across the land, construction and property sectors, displaying unity and desire to uphold high standards while maintaining unity to stay well informed on the many challenges that the constantly changing industry faces now and into the future.
Hosting this annual conference also provided an opportunity for many in the surveying world, across a large region from Galway to Donegal and all in between who have adapted to communications over many different online platforms, to meet and catch up in a face to face forum. Those who attended the conference concurred that the opportunity to bring together the different sectors of the profession for a face-to-face event is welcomed. The insight and updates from the different surveying sectors was very informative with all at the conference relating to such content in their area of expertise.
