Mayo looked to have escaped the worst of Storm Austen when a status yellow warning was withdrawn by Met Eireann. However, a more severe Status Orange Wind warning was put in place for the county for this weekend.

Met have advised a Status Orange Wind Warning will be in effect in Mayo from 2pm Saturday October 24th until 9am on Sunday October 25th with gale force westerly winds bringing severe and damaging gusts.

Mayo County Council has advised of potential hazards and has asked the public to prepare for impacts.

This includes damage to already weakened structures, damage to power lines, power outages, fallen trees, large coastal waves, loose objects being displaced and coastal flooding where winds onshore.

They have advised that disruption and delays to public transport are likely with air, rail, bus and ferry set to be impacted, leading to very difficult travelling conditions and dangerous conditions at sea.

A Status Yellow Rain Warning will be in effect prior to this from 4am on Saturday until 3pm later that day. This may lead to difficult travelling conditions and localised flooding. A Status Yellow Wind Warning will also be in effect from 1pm Saturday overnight until 12pm on Sunday.

Very strong southwest winds will veer westerly with severe gusts and coastal gales with potential for debris/loose objects displaced, some fallen trees/branches, large coastal waves and difficult driving and cycling conditions during this time.
