State support 'needed' to rebuild Mayo tennis dome

Castlebar Tennis Club requires Government support to replace its storm-damaged dome, according to local councillors.
At a meeting of Castlebar Muncipal District, councillors pledged to canvas Minister for Sport Catherine Martin on the issue. They will also write to the Minister and invite her to see the facility and the damage caused by Storm Isha.
Cllrs Donna Sheridan, Blackie Gavin, and Michael Kilcoyne were present as the club recently ramped up its clean-up operations.
“It was an awful disaster for a fantastic club,” said Cllr Ger Deere who suggested councillors keep the tennis club in mind when distributing their General Municipal Allocation, adding: “The club is of a huge benefit to Castlebar."
Cllr Cyril Burke said a new dome could cost in the region of half a million euros. He said the club is a "special case" and needs Government support.
Cllrs Sheridan and Gavin praised the club for their efforts so far and the amazing community effort shown when cleaning up the damaged dome structure.
“It was amazing to see the community together for those few hours,” said Cllr Sheridan.
“The club and the dome are really important for the town and everyone in the town,” she added.
The club is currently fundraising following the destruction of the dome.
The club's insurance cover fails to cover the storm damage and a GoFundMe page has been established.
"We are reaching out with a heartfelt appeal for your support," they said. "Our beloved Castlebar Tennis Club Dome, a hub for indoor tennis and community activities, was tragically demolished due to severe storm damage. This dome has been more than just a sports facility; it has been a vital part of our community, touching lives in countless ways."
