Start date agreed for major works on popular Mayo facility

The Tidal Pool in Belmullet is to undergo significant works.

With almost €300,000 secured for the further development of Belmullet Tidal Pool under the Government's Outdoor Recreation Infrastructure Scheme, it is now hoped that works will commence in September.

Chairman of Westport-Belmullet MD, Belmullet councillor Sean Carey, told last week's district meeting that he looked forward to the works being done, adding that the amenity had celebrated an Open Day over the previous weekend to mark it having been set up 40 years before.

“It was a great day and wonderful to see all the community come together on it to celebrate. We are looking forward to the new works.”

Cllr Gerry Coyle said that the works down at the docks in Belmullet were "a credit to all involved".

Meanwhile, Erris Head Loop Walk is proving a victim of its own success as its popularity with tourists and locals is causing damage to the ground underneath the boardwalk.

Cllr Carey told members at last week's meeting: “There are so many using it now, it has been having an effect on the ground underneath. So the boardwalk would need an increased section and I ask for funding to extend that walk.”
