Mayo man ready to run marathon in honour of his father

A Mayo man is preparing to run the Dublin Marathon to fundraise for the Alzheimer Society of Ireland, after his dad was diagnosed with the brain disorder.

David Lynn from Ballina has explained that his dad Hugh Lynn, former principal of The Quay NS and a primary teacher for 41 years, has Alzheimer’s, as had other members of the Lynn Family in the past.

After running his first marathon in May, David is now looking ahead to the Dublin Marathon at the end of October.

“My dad, Hugh Lynn, was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s a few years ago, and I am running two marathons in 2026, including the upcoming Dublin Marathon, to raise much-needed funds for The Alzheimer Society of Ireland.

“Anyone who has someone close to them with Alzheimer’s knows how challenging the experience can be. We hope that by raising these funds, we can help other families who use the services of The Alzheimer Society of Ireland.

“Thank you so much to everyone who has donated or supported the fundraiser in some way. My family and I really appreciate it.

“If anyone knows Dad, they'll already know he's told me to 'burst my boiler'!”
