Springer Spaniel saves the day by detecting water leak

A Springer Spaniel saved the day for residents of Foxford on Monday last after sniffing out a leak which was then repaired by Uisce Éireann.

Fine Gael Cllr Neil Cruise was unable to attend the July meeting of Mayo County Council in person last Monday due to the water leak but subsequently attended online and told the forum: “The reason I can’t be there today is because we have a substantial leak outside my house in Foxford. My neighbour, Willie McDermott, who works with Uisce Éireann, spotted it and next thing Kevin and Rory arrived with Robin the Springer Spaniel, who is trained to smell out chlorine and water leaks. He found the leak within fifteen minutes, and it is repaired since.”

Cllr Cruise went on to tell councillors about the wonder dog.

“Robin is a five-year-old Springer Spaniel, a beautiful dog, and was also out on the islands and found water leaks in Clare Island recently. She will lie down over the pipe to indicate she has found a leak, and to see this happening on the ground is a fantastic experience.”

As a thank-you for her great work, Cllr Cruise revealed: “We even arranged to get Robin groomed in Foxford after she had her work done.”

It was a well-deserved treat for the hard-working Robin.
