Minister for Rural and Community Development and the Gaeltacht Dara Calleary has announced the recipients of Town and Village Renewal Scheme Funding with six Mayo projects to benefit from a share of the €26 million fund.
“I am delighted to be announcing the recipients of Town and Village Renewal Funding this morning. I have allocated €1.5 million in funding to projects in Mayo," Minister Calleary explained.
The Mayo projects to receive funding are:
Ballina - €300,000 towards the festive lighting in the town. This funding will add to and upgrade the lighting infrastructure and install lighting schemes across the town that can be utilised at various times throughout the year.
Belmullet - €300,000 towards the development of a new section of Slí na Fharraige Coastal Walk, enhancing accessibility, biodiversity and cultural tourism in the town.
Castlebar - €300,000 towards the expansion of Lough Lannagh Leisure Centre car park to meet growing demand, support new sports facilities and enhance Castlebar’s development as a regional sports hub.
The Neale - €500,000 towards Phase 1 Village Enhancement Scheme – The Village Plaza. The project will develop existing village green into an accessible urban space usable for markets, concerts and local festivals.
Minister Calleary is also allocating €47,500 for project development works in Ballyhaunis at the derelict Scouts Den. This funding will allow for detailed design and preparation of planning assessments on the site. In addition, funding has been approved for the former Castlebar Swimming Pool to support the preparatory phase of transforming the disused pool into a community hub.
"This funding is evidence of my commitment to 'Our Rural Future' and to enhancing the towns and villages of Mayo as better places to live, work, socialise and to visit," said Minister Calleary. "I want to thank all those who have supported these particular towns and villages that have been successful on this occasion. I am excited about each of the projects and look forward to seeing the fruits of these labours, while I also look forward to supporting other towns and villages under the TVRS in 2026,” he added.
The funding has been welcomed by Minister of State Alan Dillon who said it would have a "hugely positive impact".
