Minister of State Alan Dillon TD has welcomed the approval for a second ASD (Autism Spectrum Disorder) special class at Swinford National School, along with authorisation for a modular extension to ensure the new class can be accommodated without delay.

Minister Dillon said he was delighted to receive confirmation from the Department of Education that the project, approved under the Department’s Modular Framework Programme, provides for the delivery of a second Special Education classroom through a devolved delivery model, enabling the school to progress the works efficiently and directly.

Minister Dillon said the announcement represents an important investment in special education provision for the Swinford community: “I am delighted to confirm approval for a second ASD class at Swinford National School, supported by a modular extension that will ensure the necessary accommodation is delivered as quickly as possible. This is a significant step forward for local families and will strengthen the school’s capacity to support children with additional needs in a modern, inclusive environment.”

Minister Dillon also acknowledged the leadership and commitment of the school community: “I want to extend my sincere thanks to Principal Adrian Cregg, the staff, and the Board of Management for their ongoing dedication to providing high quality education and support for every child. Their proactive engagement has been central to securing this additional ASD class for the school.”

The Department has confirmed that the project will now advance under the devolved delivery mechanism, allowing the school to engage directly with consultants and contractors to progress the modular build.

Minister Dillon added: “Ensuring adequate special education capacity across Mayo remains a key priority for me. Today’s approval for Swinford National School is another positive step in meeting the needs of children and families in the area, and I will continue to work closely with the Department to support timely delivery.”
