Several speeding drivers caught on Mayo roads during weekend operation

An operation carried out as part of the St Brigid’s Bank Holiday Road Safety Campaign in Mayo saw several motorists caught over the speed limit on a busy roadway.

Mayo Roads Policing Unit carried out a speed check on the N17 yesterday evening as part their ongoing Bank holiday Road Safety Campaign targeting drink and drug driving, speeding, mobile phone use and non-wearing of seatbelts.

Several motorists were detected travelling well above the 100 km/hr speed limit resulting in a fine and penalty points. One motorist was detected driving at 143km/hr while another was clocked at 139km/hr.

An Gardaí Siochana have said their message for the remainder of the Bank Holiday weekend remains clear: do not drink or drug drive, expect checkpoints, slow down and drive to the conditions, always wear seatbelts and ensure children are properly restrained, avoid distractions such as mobile phones while driving and be mindful of vulnerable road users, including pedestrians, cyclists and motorcyclists.
