Search continues for missing angler off Mayo coast

The search, which is being coordinated by An Garda Síochána, has involved the Irish Coast Guard, RNLI, Civil Defence and volunteer divers from the Gráinne Uaile Sub Aqua Club.

A multi-agency search is continuing for an angler reported missing off Downpatrick Head, Co Mayo, after he was last seen on Sunday morning.

The search, which is being coordinated by An Garda Síochána, has involved the Irish Coast Guard, RNLI, Civil Defence and volunteer divers from the Gráinne Uaile Sub Aqua Club.

The search has involved the Sligo-based Coast Guard helicopter R118, the fixed-wing aircraft R120F, the Killala Coast Guard Unit, the Ballyglass Coast Guard Unit, and the Ballyglass RNLI.

A spokesperson for the Department of Transport confirmed to the Western People that the operation is ongoing.

“On Sunday morning, the Irish Coast Guard was alerted to a missing person at Downpatrick Head, Co. Mayo.

“Since the alarm was raised on Sunday, the Marine Rescue Sub Centre at Malin Head have tasked the Sligo-based Coast Guard helicopter R118, fixed wing aircraft R120F, Killala Coast Guard unit, Ballyglass Coast Guard unit, Ballyglass RNLI to the scene to assist in a Garda-led search for a missing angler, alongside the Gráinne Uaile Sub Aqua Club and the Civil Defence,” they said.

Mayo councillor Michael Loftus, who is a member of the Gráinne Uaile Sub Aqua Club, said club members carried out underwater searches on Sunday and Monday at the request of An Garda Síochána.

It is not yet known whether further dives will take place, but surface and shoreline searches are understood to be continuing.

A spokesperson for An Garda Síochána said investigations remain ongoing after gardaí were alerted to reports of a man missing in the water during the early hours of Sunday morning.

“A search commenced at first light on Sunday morning, and Gardaí continue to search with the assistance of the Coast Guard, the Civil Defence and Grainne Uaile Sub Aqua,” they said.
