The completion of safety and road improvement works at the Windy Gap outside Castlebar has been welcomed.

Local councillors had previously expressed grave concerns after forestry works left a steep embankment exposed to motorists.

A meeting of Castlebar Municipal District heard from councillors who feared someone would lose their life on the stretch of road.

Mayo County Council have built up a protective bank and put in place a widening ring on the far side of the road.

Cllr Ger Deere said he hopes a more permanent barrier will be put in place to further protect road users on the busy stretch.

“Forestry operators need to have proper consultation with the council before felling commences to ensure the situation that happened at the Windy Gap never happens again,” said Cllr Deere.

“This location was left in such a dangerous condition it could have led to serious accidents or fatalities. All this should be part of felling licenses for these forestry operators,” he added.
