Plans are advanced for new apartment complex in Mayo town

Mayo County Council has progressed plans for the development of an apartment and housing project in Ballina, writes Paul O'Malley.

The local authority has published a notice in this week's Western People regarding the proposed development of 31 apartments at the site of the former Duffy’s Bakery in Ballina.

The 31 own-door-access apartments comprise three 3-bed units, 14 2-bed units and 14 1-bed units. The development will consist of three apartment blocks, two of which are three-storey and the other two-storey. The proposal also includes the refurbishment of the existing terrace at house numbers 5-7 Raheen Row.

The scheme includes access from Kevin Barry Street and James Connolly Street as well as all associated site development works including footpaths, cycle lane, parking, public lighting, service connections and other associated and anciliary works.

Other housing construction projects in the pipeline in Ballina include a 12-house development at the Meadows.

Approval was given by elected members during the April meeting of the Ballina Municipal District for The Meadows, which comprises five 2-bed bungalows, one 5-bed bungalow and six 3-bed two storey houses. This project will now go to tender and construction is expected to be completed within 18 to 24 months.

Meanwhile, a 66-house development at the Chesire Homes site on the Killala Road is expected to be put before councillors for approval in June while a development of around six houses at Castlefield Manor, also on the Killala Road, is still in the early planning stages.
