Planning permission granted for Mayo town housing project

The project will incorporate a pair of three-bed townhouses on Upper Charles Street, while a third two-bed dwelling will be built on nearby Lucan Street.

Planning permission has been approved for a town centre housing development in Mayo’s county town, writes Keith Bourke.

Mayo County Council has given the green light for the demolition of an existing property and rear sheds on Upper Charles Street in Castlebar. This will pave the way for the construction of new townhouses.

The project will incorporate a pair of three-bed townhouses on Upper Charles Street, while a third two-bed dwelling will be built on nearby Lucan Street.

The 0.033-hectare site is zoned as town-centre, and no on-site parking is included. However, the application states that on-street parking is available.

The building set to be demolished is a terraced two-storey dwelling on Upper Charles Street, with a backyard and an overgrown area to the west of the property. There is an access point onto Lucan Street at the southern end of the site.

The application was subject to further information requests from Mayo County Council, as concerns were raised around privacy between the proposed units and neighbouring properties, as well as the amount of private open space provided. Revised plans addressed these concerns through adjusting the initial design.

Planning permission has been granted subject to a total of eight conditions.
