The Kiltimagh Emigrant Park recently held its official opening in front of a large gathering from the local community, contractors, volunteers, political and local representatives.

The official opening of Phase One of the overall project was conducted by Bill Durkan, who generously supported the Park Committee’s fundraising appeal.
Mr Durkan said he felt the name of the Park to be an apt one.

“The name Emigrant Park, I think is very fitting considering all the thousands of people who left the station over the road there down through the years. Some of them never came back and we must think of the people who did stay here and kept the community going.” Orla Gibney, a member of the Emigrant Park Committee said they are delighted their vision has come to life after years of hard work.

“Phase One is now complete which includes a walkway with lighting, seating, pump track, the planting of native trees, and an outdoor willow classroom linked to the park’s pathways via a Roman Road. Emigrant Park is a place where visitors can find peace in the center of town, with the sounds of nature taking precedence over the sounds of the outside world.”

Gary Smyth, committee member, thanked all those who were involved in the project from the master planner, Patricia Tyrell to the local students in St Louis Community School and Youth Reach who worked on the park.
He thanked Mayo County Council, local representatives and government agencies such as Leader, Towns and Village, OPW and Sports Capital for supporting various projects in the park.
