A local councillor has called for a full review of the pedestrian crossings in the town of Ballyhaunis.
Fine Gael councillor John Cribbin told a recent meeting of Claremorris-Swinford Municipal District that there are currently five pedestrian crossings within the town, namely at Abbey Street, Bridge Street, Clare Street, Knox Street and Main Street.

Cllr Cribbin believes the level crossing at Clare St is in the wrong location.
“It’s a raised ramp at the crossing, with no markings. In my opinion, it’s in the totally wrong location because it causes more traffic and more confusion, especially with lorries going around the corner going to the meat factory,” Cllr Cribbin said. “The one on Main Street and the one on Knox Street have no lights on them. We’re talking about road safety and health and safety all the time. There was an elderly woman knocked down at one of the crossings last week. I’d like to wish her a speedy recovery.”
Senior engineer with Mayo County Council, Conrad Harley, said staff at his office will conduct a review of the pedestrian crossings in Ballyhaunis at the start of the New Year and share their findings with Cllr Cribbin.
Cllr Cribbin welcomed the update and thanked Mr Harley.
