Passing of highly regarded educator

The late Joe Gilmartin.

Warm tributes have been paid to a highly-regarded educator following his passing.

The death has taken place of Joe Gilmartin, Patrician Park, Castlebar.

In his 95th year, Joe was a former vice-principal of St Gerald's College, Castlebar, where he was held in huge regard.

"As a past pupil from 1942 to 1947 and a dedicated member of the teaching staff from 1954 to 1993, Joe devoted over four decades to shaping generations of students and helping build the legacy of our school,” said St Gerald’s College in a post on social media.

"Joe was a true gentleman - kind, compassionate, and deeply respected by all who knew him. His sharp wit and intellect made him a captivating presence in both the classroom and the staffroom, where he enriched conversations with his wisdom and humour.

"He initially taught Latin before finding his home as our master of French, a role in which he inspired countless students to not only learn the language but to appreciate its culture and beauty. Fluent in seven languages, Joe’s brilliance was evident, but it was always shared with humility and grace," the tribute added.

Joe was a devoted husband to the late Máire, much loved father to the late Eoin, and to Emer, Martin, Ivor, Máire and Brendan, and grandfather to Naoise, Martina, Patrick and Ainara.
