Ongoing talks over works on 'notorious' road

Conor Pat O'Connor described the stretch of road as "notorious".
Regular talks on N5 road safety improvements are taking place between Mayo County Council and Transport Infrastructure Ireland,
Tom Gilligan, Mayo Co Council's Director of Services with responsibility for Roads, has responded to calls from coroner for Mayo, Patrick O’Connor, to address an "infamous 3km stretch" of the N5 between Ballymiles and the junction at Cloonlara. The location has seen multiple fatalities over the past few years and Mr O'Connor made his comments at an inquest into one of those crash victims.
Mr Gilligan stressed there are a lot of junctions in that area.
“We are certainly looking at safety works anywhere at all and particularly along the N5 and in the Swinford area where there has been a number of collisions,” he said. “We meet with Transport Infrastructure Ireland every month and we go through projects with them and there are several issues in relation to the N5 and particularly in the Swinford area.”
A total of 12 people died in road traffic collisions in Mayo in 2023, an increase of seven, and Mr Gilligan has urged drivers to be vigilant and considerate of other road users.
