Gardaí from the Mayo South CE Area, in conjunction with our colleagues in the Roads Policing Unit and the Divisional Drugs Unit, conducted a joint operation in the Westport and Castlebar areas on 22/11/25 in an effort to curb the recent increase in both anti-social driving and drug-related activities in the area.

Garda Mobility devices and Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) technology were used during this operation, with multiple detections being made by Gardaí while on patrol.

During the operation, three drivers were arrested on suspicion of intoxicated driving, with one of these drivers found to have five active bench warrants in existence. Four cars in total were seized, three of which were on suspicion of having no insurance.

A number of drug-related detections were also made by the Divisional Drugs Unit during this operation. Following searches of individuals and various properties in the area, approximately €2000 of suspected cannabis and cocaine was discovered, with prosecutions to follow pending analysis of the substances.

An Garda Síochána Mayo stated: "As we enter the festive season, we are appealing to all in the community to be vigilant of criminal activity, drive safely and ensure their vehicles are safe for use on public roads."
