No timeline for safety works on 'total danger' Ballina road

It will be known "any day now" if funding will be approved for traffic calming measures at an area of Ballina described as a "total danger" by a local councillor, writes Paul O'Malley.

Fine Gael Cllr Marie-Therese Duffy brought a notice of motion before last week's meeting of Ballina Municipal District inquiring about the timeline for the installation of the safety measures on the R314 Killala Road between Leigue Cemetery and the entrance road to Culleens National School.

"There are no safety measures between the Cemetery and Culleens. If you are crossing the road from one estate to the other along here, it's a total danger with no traffic calming measures along there at all," said Cllr Duffy.

In response, area engineer Orla Bourke said that the provision of these measures was subject to funding. She said the location was recently unsuccessful in an application made to the National Transport Authority for funding.

An application was also made under the Low Cost Safety Scheme with a decision expected "any day now", according to Ms Bourke, who added that some works may be progressed in the interim through other funding streams such as General Municipal Allocations.
