A total of 500 homes were built in Mayo last year, according to the latest data from the Central Statistics Office.

When broken down by electoral area, Castlebar saw the highest number of homes constructed in the county at 137.

The Belmullet and Claremorris each saw 83 house completions. In Westport, 77 homes were built and 70 in the Ballina area. Swinford had 50 homes built.

There were 72 fewer homes in the county built in 2025 compared to the previous year.

Elsewhere in the West, 1,063 homes were built in Co Galway during the same period and 414 in Galway City. Co Sligo saw 394 completions with 226 in Co Roscommon.

A total of 36,284 homes were built in Ireland last year, an increase of 20.4% on 2024.

The figures are higher than most economists had expected and represent the largest number of completions since 2011 when figures were first compiled.

Housing completions for 2024 came to 30,147, which was a fall on 2023 when there were 32,695 homes built.

More than half of the completions last year were in Dublin or surrounding counties of Kildare, Louth, Meath and Wicklow.

Taoiseach Micheál Martin has described the number of completions as very significant.

However he said he accepted that the figures still are not sufficient and more needs to be done to increase the number to 50,000 per year, and to maintain those figures for a decade in order to match population growth.

The Construction Industry Federation has said the industry was "slightly taken by surprise" at the 36,000 figure.
