New figures reveal areas in Mayo with the most new houses

Ballina is the local electoral area (LEA) in Mayo with the fewest new dwellings in 2024, according to data from the Central Statistics Office (CSO).

A total of 245 new dwellings have been completed in Mayo in the first half of 2024. Of these, 148 were single houses, 78 were scheme houses and 19 were apartments.

The figure is a slight decrease in the number of new dwellings completed in the first half of 2023 when 252 new dwellings had been completed in the county. Of these, 140 were single houses, 93 were scheme houses and 19 were apartments.

However, this year's figure is an increase on the pre-pandemic total of 177 new dwellings completed in the first half of 2019.

In the years following, 174 new dwellings were in the first half of 2020, 163 during the same period in 2021 and 211 in the first six months of 2022.

Just 26 of the 245 new dwellings completed in Mayo this year are located in the Ballina LEA compared to 58 for the same period last year.

Swinford also saw a decrease in the number of new dwellings from 36 in the first half of 2024 to 28 this year.

A decrease was also recorded in the Claremorris LEA from 52 new dwellings in the first half of 2023 to 38 this year.

The figures increased, however, in Castlebar, Westport and Belmullet. In Castlebar, 60 new dwellings were completed up to the end of June 30, an increase on last year's comparable figure of 48. In Westport, 61 new dwellings have been completed this year compared to 42 last year. In Belmullet, there have been 32 new dwellings completed compared to 20 for the same period last year.

A total of 523 new dwellings were completed in Mayo during 2023 and the figures for the first half of this year suggest a similar figure. Anecdotally, house-building has increased moderately in the county but is coming from a low base.

The CSO has said the data is based on the number of domestic dwellings connected by the ESB Network to the electricity supply and may not accord precisely with geographical boundaries.
