Modular homes 'must be an option' in Mayo

A senior official with Mayo County Council has said modular housing is an option that builders in the county should consider.

Director of Services Catherine McConnell was replying to a query at last week's council meeting from Castlebar-based Cllr Michael Kilcoyne who noted that there was a plan for modular housing in Co Limerick but none in Co Mayo.

Cllr Richard Finn supported his colleague, saying: “When people think about modular homes they imagine a few sticks thrown up here and there but the reality is they can turn out to be the most beautiful architectural works that can be built. And they can be built at a good price, rapidly and people can get access to them within a short time. The architects of Ireland have already certified these homes are every bit as perfect as traditional builds.”

Noting that “modular homes in certain places would be a quick fix”, Louisburgh Cllr Chris Maxwell reiterated a call he has already made at other council meetings: “Why not make a section in each town a serviced site where either council or people themselves provide decent mobile homes and at least give them the dignity of a roof over their heads for the time being.”

Ms McConnell told the councillors: “There is nothing in the planning code or system here that precludes modular buildings, so that is a decision for the builder. If it is a good design in a good location, whether modular, concrete or block, does not matter.”
