A county councillor has appealed to Mayo County Council to help develop a public indoor swimming pool in Belmullet so that people in North Mayo can swim in it all year round.

Speaking at the November meeting of Westport Belmullet MD, Cllr Sean Carey said Mayo has eleven public or privately operated swimming pools but that from Binghamstown in North Mayo, the nearest one is 75km away. He stated: “People in Erris don’t have access to a swimming pool and they provide so many benefits; they are a help to people with disabilities and are indoor so can be used all year round, so we are at a massive disadvantage. What can we do? It is affecting people’s health and mental health with such an amenity lacking from the whole area. So many residents and all the schoolchildren could avail of it. Instead, they have to go to Mulranny or Westport or Castlebar for lessons.”

Cllr Carey added: “I ask for consideration for a community sports facility fund and that an application be made by the council in this regard for the Belmullet area.” The proposal was supported by members.
