Mayo supermarket to be demolished and rebuilt

The German retail giant has received planning permission for the development.
A Mayo supermarket is to be demolished and rebuilt.
German retail giant Lidl has secured planning permission from Mayo County Council to demolish and rebuild its store at Moneen in Castlebar.
The new store’s floor space will be 31% greater than the existing store, rising from 1,854 square metres gross floor space to 2,451 square metres.
Lidl said that the current store was "likely to be overtrading" and said the scale of the expansion was "entirely proportionate and would not alter the character of the existing retail activity".
The existing store opened in 2007.
Lidl said the current premises is "no longer suitable to cater for customer expectations and the existing scale of demand".
“Coupled with the limited scale of expansion, the proposed development would not be likely to have any noticeable or material effect on the convenience retail sector in the catchment area other than enhancing customer experience,” said the company in its application.
The retailer has estimated that the development will add five to ten additional direct full-time jobs at the Moneen outlet, in addition to indirect and construction stage employment.
Work is expected to take nine months and be complete by September 2026.
