The Castlebar and Ballina branches of Soroptimist International Republic of Ireland (SIROI) are proud to announce their participation in the annual United Nations 'Orange the World campaign, marking 16 days of activism against gender-based violence, starting from today (Tuesday, November 25) and continuing until December 10.
This international campaign, one of the core commitments of Soroptimists worldwide, unites individuals, communities, and organisations in taking action to end violence against women and girls. Across Ireland, all 15 Soroptimist clubs will host a wide range of awareness-raising events and activities designed to highlight this urgent issue and promote positive change.
From lighting up public buildings in orange, to solidarity walks, awareness displays, and poster and flyer campaigns, members will be a visible presence in local towns and cities. Clubs are also engaging with young people through the national Soroptimist Public Speaking Competition, focusing on the signs of healthy relationships, and distributing specially-created bookmarks and educational materials that spread the message of equality and respect.
SIROI President Siobhán Matthews said:
“Gender-based violence is a global crisis that requires both global and local action. Every year, our members stand together in their communities and as part of a powerful international movement to shine a light on this issue. The ‘Orange the World’ campaign reminds us that awareness leads to action, and action leads to change. We invite everyone in Ireland to join us in speaking out, standing up, and making a visible commitment to ending violence against women and girls.”
National Programme Action Officer, Eileen Kelly, added: “Soroptimists across Ireland are united in our determination to create safe, equal, and empowered communities. The creativity and commitment shown by our 15 clubs, from innovative local displays to youth engagement initiatives, demonstrate the strength of grassroots activism. Together, we can make a real difference.”
The 16 days of activism is a key element of the SIROI calendar, reflecting Soroptimist International’s mission to transform the lives and status of women and girls through education, empowerment, and enabling opportunities. SIROI encourages individuals, community groups, and local authorities to take part and show their support by turning their towns and cities orange this November and December.
