Mayo scholar is honoured on the global stage

The research of Caoilfhinn Plunkett has gained the young Mayo woman significant recognition at the Global Undergraduate Awards.

A Mayo student at Trinity College has gained significant recognition at the world’s leading academic awards programme for undergraduate research.

The Global Undergraduate Awards (GUA) announced Caoilfhinn Plunkett from Castlebar as a winner of the highly commended award at the All-Ireland summit event held on Thursday at the Royal Irish Academy, Dublin.

One of just four Irish students to be recognised this year, Caoilfhinn was awarded for her project ‘Analysing Whether Student Experiences of Using TooGoodToGo Support a Sustainable Food Transition in Dublin’ in the Earth and Environmental category.

The Global Undergraduate Awards programme sees the best 10% of submissions deemed highly commended while regional winners are the highest-performing highly commended entrants from a GUA region in their category. The top submission in each category is deemed the global winner and awarded the Thomas Clarkson Gold Medal. Following an extensive judging process by 500 academics worldwide, the winners were selected from over 2,400 submissions spanning 348 universities in 99 countries across 25 categories.

“We are delighted to celebrate these exceptional students and their achievements at the All-Ireland Awards event,” said Jim Barry, chair of The Global Undergraduate Awards.

“These awards celebrate the very best of undergraduate research from every corner of the world.

“We are particularly proud to see Irish students once again recognised on the global stage, reflecting the strength of Ireland’s higher education sector,” he added.
