Mayo road motorist among 266 drivers caught using phones while at the wheel

Already this year, 762 motorists have received Fixed Penalty Notices (€120 fine and three penalty points on their licence) for this road traffic offence.
Between 7am on Wednesday, January 15, and 7am on Thursday, January 16, An Garda Síochána held a national day of action targeting the use of a mobile phone while driving.
During this 24-hour period, Gardaí detected 266 drivers using their phones while driving. Already this year, 762 motorists have received Fixed Penalty Notices (€120 fine and three penalty points on their licence) for this road traffic offence.
Also during this, An Garda Síochána Roads Policing Unit in Mayo pulled in the driver of a jeep on the N17 after they saw him using his phone while driving.

The daily average detected using their phone while driving during 2024 was 60. Over 21,500 drivers received FCPNs last year having been detected using their phone while behind the wheel.
The detection rate therefore shows a four-fold increase.
