Mayo records rise in completed dwellings but Castlebar is outlier

The total number of completed homes in Mayo in 2023 is ahead of last year but still below the national average.
A total of 375 new dwellings have been completed in Mayo in the first three quarters of 2023, an increase of 45 compared to the same period last year.
The Claremorris and Swinford Local Electoral Areas (LEA) accounted for the largest percentage increase while the average for the county as a whole was 13.6%, which was slightly below the national average of 14.4%.
The figures were revealed by the Central Statistics Office, which used new connections to the electricity network as the basis for its data.
In the first three months of 2023, 114 new dwellings were completed in Mayo. This increased to 137 in Q2 and there were a further 124 new dwellings completed in Q3. With an average of 125 houses built per quarter this year, the county is on course to surpass last year’s completed dwellings total of 452.
Breaking the figures down by LEA, 16 more dwellings have been completed in the Claremorris district this year compared to the whole of last year. The Claremorris LEA comprises the towns of Claremorris, Ballinrobe, Knock and Ballindine. A total of 94 new dwellings have been completed this year, compared to 78 last year.
In Swinford LEA, there has also been an increase from a total of 29 completed new dwellings in the whole of 2022 to 47 thus far in 2023. In the first quarter of 2023, a total of 28 new dwellings were completed in Swinford LEA compared to just two for the same period in 2022.
In Ballina LEA, 91 were completed in the whole of last year. The figure for the first three quarters of this year is 75 but that is higher than this time last year when 56 new dwellings were completed.
In Belmullet LEA, 38 new dwellings were completed last year. The figure this year thus far is 30, which is higher than the same period last year when 27 were completed.
A total of 77 new dwellings were completed in the Westport LEA last year, with 61 completed thus far this year.
However, there has been a downward trend in the number of completed dwellings in the Castlebar LEA. Some 68 new dwellings have been completed in the first nine months of 2023 compared to 100 for the same period last year. In the first quarter of the year, 15 new dwellings were completed compared to 32 in the first three months of 2022. It now looks inevitable that Castlebar will fall short of last year's total figure of 135 completed dwellings.
