Mayo Gardai catch truck driver speeding while on cocaine

Gardai made the arrest last night.

The Mayo Roads Policing Unit arrested a HGV driver for a series of offences last night.

The truck driver tested positive for cocaine, was speeding, had no tax or insurance on the vehicle, no tachograph was in use, and the man was not wearing a seatbelt. He has also been charged with dangerous driving.

As part of their ongoing Road Safety Christmas Campaign, Gardaí were carrying out a speed checkpoint in Foxford and detected this Heavy Goods Vehicle laden with a load weighing 30 tonnes travelling at 90km/h in a 60km/h speed zone.

Gardai then discovered the litany of road traffic breaches.

The driver is set to appear before the courts and the truck was seized.

“The consequences are real for drug driving. Never drive under the influence. Drug-driving is not just illegal – it’s life-threatening. Even small amounts can seriously impair reaction times and coordination.

"If you drive under the influence, you're risking your future – and someone else's life,” say Gardai
