Mayo community rallies around young girl who spent 11 days in ICU

Shannon Lynch

A Mayo community has rallied around a young girl who suffered a brain bleed.

A fundraiser has been launched to aid 11-year-old Shannon Lynch’s road to recovery that has raised over €50,000 within just four days of its launch.

Shannon took very ill at her home in Cashel, Achill Island and was rushed to Mayo University Hospital where it was quickly discovered she had a substantial bleed on the right hand side of her brain.

She was immediately rushed to Temple Street Children's Hospital in Dublin where the surgeon and his team were waiting to take her to theatre. After a lengthy operation, they eventually succeeded in stopping the bleed and Shannon spent 11 days in ICU recovering. She is continuing her recovery in St. Gabriels Ward in Temple Street at present.

Shannon will have to undergo another operation in Beaumont Hospital on the 4th of April to remove the AVM on the brain that caused the bleed as there is a risk of another bleed especially within the year.

She will recover from this operation in ICU Temple Street Children's Hospital before returning to St. Gabriels Ward for further recovery and rehabilitation. It is unknown how long rehabilitation will take as it will be at Shannon’s pace.

Her family said on the fundraising page that she is doing amazing and they are looking forward to having her home once more when the time is right and to get back to Saula National School, back on the pitch for Achill Rovers and Achill LGFA and Irish dancing with O’Connor School of Dancing.

All donations can be made at the following LINK and will be used to assist Shannon’s road to recovery and to help meet all her needs.
