Mayo Cllrs struggling to access emails despite €4.2m IT spend

Mayo councillors are struggling to access certain emails.
Councillors have questioned Mayo County Council’s €4.2m spend on IT when they are persistently experiencing email issues.
Fine Gael’s Donna Sheridan said councillors are not receiving important emails and despite repeated requests the issue has not been rectified.
Cllr Sheridan said vitals emails are being placed in ‘quarantine’ as a result of security measures put in place by the local authority.
“It has got beyond frustrating,” said Cllr Sheridan.
“We are spending this much money and we can’t get our emails,” she added.
Cllr Michael Kilcoyne said he is experiencing similar problems.
“That kind of service is of no use at all,” said Cllr Kilcoyne. He requested a report in the matter for the next meeting of Mayo County Council.
Cllr Damien Ryan said the issue should be place on the agenda for next month’s meeting of the local authority. “There needs to be a clear understanding, mindful of the fact that we are under cyber threat,” said Cllr Ryan.
Mayo County Council’s Director of Finance, Peter Duggan said he will address some of the issues raised by councillors in a report next month. He stressed the importance of protecting the council from cyber attacks.
