The initiative was born from strong community demand for a safe, dedicated space where dogs could exercise off-leash without impacting other park users.

The Lough Lannagh Dog Park, which is due to open early in the new year, represents a landmark development for Castlebar and is the first public dog park in the county.
This amenity was funded through the Community Recognition Fund, which supports projects that enhance local infrastructure and foster community wellbeing.
The initiative was born from strong community demand for a safe, dedicated space where dogs could exercise off-leash without impacting other park users.
It was the brainchild of Fine Gael councillor Donna Sheridan, who tabled a motion on the matter at a meeting of the Castlebar Municipal District in 2023.
Key features will include two separate zones for small and large dogs, ensuring safety and comfort for all breeds; specialised play equipment for dogs, promoting physical activity and enrichment; secure fencing and double-gated entry for safety; seating areas and waste disposal stations for convenience and cleanliness; natural landscaping to blend seamlessly with the lakeside environment.
The picturesque Lough Lannagh is a hugely popular facility with many townspeople using it on a regular basis for their leisure activities.
