Key road in Mayo 'continues to be neglected'

A local community representative has said the main Castlebar to Erris roadway continues to be neglected by Mayo County Council.

Brendan Lavelle, who is the chairman of Keenagh Community Development, said people living in communities along the R312 have worked hard to secure improvements to the road but a lot of work remains undone. He was also a member of a Regional and Local Roads Committee.

“We have worked hard, meeting with TDs, local councillors and council officials but not enough has been happening.”

Mr Lavelle also said that improvements on the road has been managed poorly. He cited a section of the road that was recently resurfaced (see picture) that had nearly six inches hollow on one side of it.

He suggested that works on the regional roads such as this should be handled by a contractor as opposed to Mayo County Council. He added that a road project from Crossmolina to Lahardane has also not received adequate funding.

“The way forward for regional roads is to give it to a contractor to look after. The water tables weren’t opened and the hedges weren’t cut in some places and that can be a health and safety problem,” said Mr Lavelle, who was an unsuccessful candidate in the recent local elections.
